Suny Downstate Medical Center, formally known as the State University of New York Health Science Center, is one of the 125 academic medical centers in the nation. The center, the only academic medical facility in Brooklyn, was started in 1860. It is a center of excellence in education, research and health care to students, faculty, patients, and the community.
The medical center comprises College of Medicine, College of Health Related Professions, College of Nursing, School of Graduate Studies, and University Hospital of Brooklyn. Through the hospital and academic affiliates, the medical center provides quality, compassionate and accessible healthcare services.
Suny Downstate is a regional referral center for cardiac care patients, and is maintained an outstanding record in angioplasty, bypass surgery, and other procedures. A broad range of inpatient and outpatient services are offered in various areas of specialization, including asthma care, dermatology, family practice, HIV center for women and children, neurosurgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, rehabilitation medicine, otolaryngology, preventive medicine, surgery, and transplantation.
